- Industry Norms: In some industries, corporate gifting is just more prevalent — or the “cool” thing to do — and may be seen as a standard practice for building and maintaining relationships with clients, partners, and employees. In other industries, it may be less common or unnecessary. You probably are familiar with your industry, and would know if it’s an important factor. For employees, I find that gifts are ALWAYS appreciated and help to cultivate a happier, warmer work environment.
- Cost Considerations: Some businesses may place a strong emphasis on personal relationships and expressing gratitude, making corporate gifting a natural extension of their culture. Others may prioritize different ways of showing appreciation or fostering connections. Ultimately you need to know if the gifts you give will generate either a direct return in sales, or at least cultivate relationships that are vital to you.
- Culture Club: Every workplace has its vibe. While it may feel expected in some businesses, if product gifting feels wrong for your environment or it will go unappreciated, it’s best to save your effort and show your appreciation in other ways such as award ceremonies or cash bonuses.
- Legally Speaking: Yes, there are rules in this game (sadly for me!). In certain industries or regions, there may be regulations or ethical guidelines regarding gift-giving to prevent conflicts of interest, bribery, or other unethical behavior. Businesses must be mindful of these considerations when deciding whether to give gifts. Better be safe than sorry, for sure. But also do your research before writing off the idea – you might be surprised to find it’s perfectly acceptable. Check with HR first!
- Effectiveness: It’s all about the ROI (that’s Return on Investment). If gifts bring your business great vibes and make everyone smile, then it’s right for you. If not, no need to force it.
So, while corporate gifting can be fun and enjoyable, remember, it’s not a one-size-fits-all party hat. There are many benefits to corporate gifting if you do choose to incorporate this into your business.
