My favorite phone conversations start like this:
“Hi Carrie, our company is tired of doing the same old boring gifts. We’ve been sending gifts for years, but nothing we do really stands out and lasts. Can you do something different, something that doesn’t look like we just went to the local candy shop?”
I had this EXACT conversation just today with a lovely woman from Brooklyn.
Yes.
Yes!
and yessss!
If your company is spending thousands of dollars on gifts for your clients, employees and associates, you certainly want to be sure your gift keeps working for you.
Companies spend a LOT of money branding food. I honestly don’t get it! Why spend hundreds of dollars on something that is about to disappear? Take a moment and think: You’re basically telling your recipient: “Isn’t my company cool because our logo is on YOUR cake?” Then, down the hatch is goes – gone forever.
I find this a particularly NOT effective way to tell your client “I value our relationship”. It’s more of a “Look at us, look at us!”
I also find it not useful because there’s nothing left to remember you by and your money pretty much went down the hatch with it.
(I’m ok with branding food items, as long as there’s something substantial, as well.)
You want your gift to be enjoyed, used and admired for many years, not just the half hour it takes to eat the chocolate/candy/cookies/fruit, etc. Because once the food is gone…your gift is gone.
So what is the secret to Great Gifting?
This:
Giving a gift that will LAST, that makes the recipient SMILE, that is enjoyable for a LONG time, that is USEFUL and ALSO includes a delicious treat or two along with it (because, really, who doesn’t love yummy treats?)
You want the gift to feel HEARTFELT.
And the key is this: You won’t be wasting money because you will be remembered each time the gift is used. This means your hard-earned money is continuously WORKING for you.
