I was curious to know which states are the most generous – and whether I am living in one of them or not!
Here is what I discovered:
Utah, Wyoming, and Minnesota are often cited as the most charitable states in the U.S.
These states consistently rank high in terms of volunteer rates, volunteer hours per capita, and percentage of income donated to charity. Other states frequently mentioned in lists of top charitable states include Maine, Maryland, and Oregon.
Here’s a more detailed look:
- Utah: Utah consistently ranks highly, often topping the lists for charitable giving. Researchers highlight its high volunteer rate, with a large percentage of residents donating their time to good causes. Utah also stands out for the amount of income residents donate.
- Wyoming: Wyoming is frequently recognized for its generosity, often ranking near the top of charitable giving lists. Despite being one of the least populated states, it offers abundant charitable opportunities per resident.
- Minnesota: Minnesota is another state frequently mentioned as a leader in charitable giving. It consistently scores well in both financial contributions and community service.

I’m a little sad to see my own state of NY did not make this list. 🫤
